Three 6 Mafia was given the key to Memphis on Tues April 4th by Mayor Wille W. Herenton. This marks several firsts for Memphis and Three 6 Mafia. This is the first black mayor of Memphis, giving the first “Note on Beale Street” to a rap group. Plus it marks the first time in a long time where Memphis’s amazing rap scene is actually getting the attention it deserves.
The article goes on to say, “Three 6 Mafia — who catapulted to the forefront of mainstream attention on March 5, 2006 when the group became the first hip-hop ensemble ever to take home the Academy Award for Best Original Song — was honored at Saturday’s red-carpet reception with special presentations from The City of Memphis, the Beale Street Development Corporation and the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum. In addition to receiving the Key to The City of Memphis, home of the blues and birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll, Three 6 Mafia became the first rap performers to be given a “Note on Beale Street.”
